Methylsulfonylmethane
MSM is a compound found in humans, plants and animals and can also be produced synthetically for medicinal use. A popular source of MSM is cow’s milk. Other food sources include coffee, swiss chard, corn, beer, tomatoes, and tea. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is made by combining Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) and Hydrogen Peroxide and is a source of sulfur for methionine. Most commonly used for joint conditions, MSM helps to preserve and maintain connective tissues.
On a molecular level, MSM can reduce neutrophil production and therefore also reduce the production of oxidative free radicals.
MSM is a low-toxicity agent that Naturopathic Doctors can safely use as an anti-inflammatory agent in a number of inflammatory conditions. A major benefit of MSM is that it can be used with most medications, supplements or herbal agents.
Our clinical experience and scholarly research has shown that MSM is beneficial for gastrointestinal concerns, pain, autoimmune conditions, bladder inflammation and fibromyalgia. It has been found that MSM can help to improve gastrointestinal motility and promote more frequent bowel movements in those individuals more susceptible to constipation. Studies have also shown improvement of Scleroderma with IV MSM treatments, especially when digestive organs are involved. Results have been documented with IV MSM and Rheumatoid Arthritis with improvement in joint stiffness, pain and mobility.
Another condition in which clinic Naturopaths have seen naturopathic patients improve is IV MSM administration in seasonal allergies and asthma. Asthma has an immune system component driven by inflammation.
