Chelation Therapy

Chelating agents are compounds that can bind to certain heavy metals. Chelation therapy may be part of a comprehensive treatment plan, as determined by a qualified healthcare provider. Commonly used chelating agents include:

  • Ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA)
  • 2,3-Dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (DMPS)
  • Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA)

Heavy Metal Exposure and Its Effects

Lead

Lead can be harmful because it binds to red blood cells, which transport it to various tissues. Over time, lead accumulates in the bones. During pregnancy, stored lead can be mobilized alongside calcium, posing risks to both the mother and developing fetus. Even at low levels, lead exposure has been associated with:

  • Balance and coordination issues
  • Hearing loss
  • Mood disorders (e.g., depression, panic)
  • Neurological symptoms resembling Parkinson’s disease
  • Gout
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Reduced walking speed

Mercury

Over the past 20 years, mercury levels in the Pacific Ocean have increased by approximately 30%, leading to higher mercury concentrations in certain fish. Health authorities recommend limiting consumption of fish like tuna—particularly for children—due to mercury concerns. Mercury has also been identified in high-fructose corn syrup in some research.

Mercury tends to accumulate in specific tissues, including:

  • Kidneys
  • Liver
  • Gastrointestinal tract
  • Brain
  • Jaw
  • Retina

Cadmium

Cadmium is a heavy metal used in industries such as:

  • Battery production
  • Metal plating
  • Pigment manufacturing
  • Plastic stabilization

The most common source of cadmium exposure is tobacco smoke. Additionally, research indicates that individuals with iron deficiency may absorb cadmium more efficiently. Other dietary sources include shrimp and certain seafood.

Cadmium is classified as a carcinogen, meaning it has been linked to an increased risk of cancer.

Compliance Note

Health Canada regulations prohibit specific claims about the health benefits of chelation therapy or heavy metal detoxification. Chelating agents are part of a tailored treatment plan after a thorough health assessment by our naturopathic doctor to determine appropriateness and safety.
