Alpha-lipoic Acid
Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a naturally occurring antioxidant produced by the body. It can also be obtained through dietary sources such as red meat, carrots, beets, spinach, broccoli, and potatoes. Once produced or ingested ALA plays a role in activating and regenerating other antioxidants, helping to protect cells from oxidative stress. By preventing the oxidation of molecules, ALA helps mitigate cellular damage caused by free radicals, which can contribute to cell dysfunction or death. A unique property of naturally occurring ALA is its fat-solubility, which allows it to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and neutralize free radicals within the brain. In red blood cells, ALA may promote glutathione synthesis, further supporting the body’s antioxidant defense system. It also works synergistically with other antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E.
Health Canada Compliance Notice
While ALA has been widely studied and consumed, Health Canada prohibits unsubstantiated claims regarding its use for specific medical purposes. Individuals are encouraged to consult our naturopathic doctor to determine its suitability for their health needs.
