No known cause to Autism
Although Autism now affects 1 in 64 children in Canada there is still no known cause. Genetics, immune dysregulation, and infections are among the many theories suspected to play a role in causing this disease. A variety of toxic exposures, such as lead poisoning, have also been hypothesized to play a role in the onset of the disorder.
DDT and Austim
A recent study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, analyzed blood levels of more than 1 million mothers in Finland. The study showed that mothers with high levels of a pesticide DDT, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, in their blood during pregnancy were more likely to have a child with Autism. Mothers with high levels of DDT in their blood samples were 32% more likely than women with lower DDT levels to give birth to children who developed autism. Although the study does not identify a mechanism for why DDT exposure is linked with Autism, it does provide further evidence that environmental exposures and toxicity play a role in the development of the disease. Of note, the same study did not find a correlation between PCBs and Autism, which emphasizes the fact that further research is necessary into what toxins impact the development of Autism. DDT was banned in Canada in 1990, however DDT can accumulate in soil and water for decades after use.
