The research on the human microbiota is exploding.

Our human microbiome is composed of all genes in the bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa that live in and on our bodies. It is estimated that we have about one trillion of these organisms. The health implications can affect all of our body systems, from our digestive track to our nervous system.

Anxiety, depression, sleep habits, type 2 diabetes, alzheimer’s, digestive disorders, and body mass are just a few of the ways that our microbiota affect our health.

The consequences of these organisms are far reaching in our bodies, both positive and negative. Naturopathic doctors have been promoting testing and treatment of imbalances in our microbiota for many decades. With testing we can pinpoint the abnormal species and begin a treatment plan to eradicate them. Naturopathic testing can also help our “good species” to flourish.

Targeted naturopathic treatment plans are developed based on the results of the testing to manipulate the microbiota and reverse the dysbiosis.  This is done by introducing targeted natural antibiotics, probiotics, and prebiotics to help manage certain disease conditions.
