A woman in her early fourties came to the clinic with a primary complaint of severe allergies. She frequently broke out in hives and had in the previous few years made numerous trips to the emergency room for allergy attacks. She required daily use of anti-histamines. The woman was very active but noticed that she was increasingly tired and having trouble with weight control. The patient’s husband had tested positive in the past for Lyme Disease so she was tested for Lyme and co-infections to identify if there was an underlying infection that was over stimulating her immune system. The patient was positive for Lyme and negative for co-infections. The testing showed increased levels of Lyme cytokines. These are inflammatory molecules in the body that are made as a result of the infection, and are common in patients who suffer from inflammatory symptoms such as severe allergies. The patient’s naturopathic blood tests also showed that she had adrenal fatigue and hypothyroidism. Thyroid and adrenal support were started to balance her hormones. The patient then started Lyme specific treatment that included supplements, vitamins, immune support, antibiotics and IV therapies. Supplements had a variety of actions including: Within six months the patient reported 100% of their symptoms were resolved and she no longer required allergy medication. She had enough energy again to play sports regularly. The patient continues to regular naturopathic IV treatments to keep her immune system strong and she is on a supplement regimen to prevent symptoms from returning in the future.
