Dysbiosis and Microbiome Optimization
Dysbiosis is an imbalance in microbial flora of the gut. Ideally, multiple organisms should be present in the gut, but in a balanced quantity so that one microbe does not dominate the others. When there is one overgrowth of one microbe, our immune system, the majority of which is located in the gut, may present as being compromised. Our primary goal at the Nardella Clinic in Calgary is to create a balance in the gut flora to support the immune system.
Comprehensive stool testing can tell us which bacteria are present in larger numbers than others. This allows us to ensure there are healthy levels of beneficial bacteria and identify bacteria, parasites and yeast that are present in abnormal amounts.
If dysbiosis is detected treatments are employed, not only decrease abnormal bacteria, but to support the healthy growth of beneficial bacteria. A diet high in fermented foods is known to support a healthy microbiome. Examples of this include raw sauerkraut, kombucha, and kimchi.
