PRP for Hair Restoration

PRP or platelet-rich plasma for hair restoration for both men and women is an effective treatment to restore and enhance hair growth. Hair sheds and regrows, on average losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Excessive hair loss is often gradual and can happen for years before noticeable effects. Often patients will see a gradual thinning, a receding hair line, a thinner ponytail or a slowly growing bald spot. Several factors can contribute to hair loss, such as genetic influences that affects both men and women, age, hormonal changes, hormonal disorders, major life stresses, exposure to heavy metals, dietary deficiencies, hairstyles that traction the hair, post-covid infections, lyme disease or medications.

Platelets promote cell growth and regeneration through the release of various growth factors and cytokines. These growth factors stimulate specialized cells called dermal papilla cells, which play a critical role in hair growth and tissue regeneration. PRP is often used in sports medicine, regenerative medicine, and aesthetic medicine. Several studies have demonstrated PRP to be a safe and effective treatment for hair regrowth.

PRP requires a specialized tube for a blood draw. The tube is placed in a PRP specific centrifuge concentrating the platelets. Platelets are then drawn up into a syringe and injected into the scalp using a very small needle. A treatment plan usually involves 3 treatments set a month apart. Maintenance treatments may be required for some patients once every 6 months. PRP does not require any down time, and patients can go back to their daily activities the same day. Side effects may be experienced by some patients including temporary mild pain during the treatment, mild headache, transient redness, itching, and swelling in the treated area.
